The success of modern insurance since the late 17th century was based on several factors. Next to the business acumen of its proponents and new ways of financing enterprises with stock capital, it was the accumulation and processing of knowledge which made this business successful in the end. Science, and especially actuarial science, made a huge difference to traditional mutual societies, which did not have any means to calculate their risk exposure.
