Insurance in Sub-Saharan Africa was dominated by the colonial powers for a long time. Portuguese, French, British and German traders established insurance companies mainly in trading posts, insuring their own interests and subjects.

The client base in Africa significantly increased with motor insurance. In 1976 African Re, which had been founded with the aid of the African Development Bank, started business on an international basis.
