In November 2005, Swiss Re announced it had agreed to acquire GE Insurance Solutions (GEIS), the fifth largest reinsurer worldwide.
The deal included the Kansas-based Employers Reinsurance Corporation (ERC). ERC in 1995 had aquired the German domiciled Frankona Reinsurance Company and the second oldest reinsurer Aachen Reinsurance. The European ERC Group then operated as GE Frankona Re. Later ERC began marketing under the brand "GE Insurance Solutions."
The aquisition of GEIS allowed Swiss Re to build on the benefits of an enlarged client base and expanded product offerings. It consolidated Swiss Re's global leadership position further.
