When manufacturers began to make their fortunes during Switzerland's industrialization period, Rüschlikon became a popular weekend getaway. Located near the commercial centre of Zurich and providing a marvellous view of the lake, it attracted numerous entrepreneurs. In 1926, silk manufacturer Carl Martin Leonhard Bodmer and his wife Anna Vogel had a residence built there.
In 1995 the estate with the Bodmer Villa was sold to Swiss Re. In the same year, a competition was held inviting 12 Swiss architecture firms to participate. The jury awarded the first prize to a project by Zurich architects Marcel Meili and Markus Peter.
A conference building, the Pavilion, was constructed for the site as well as the Centre’s hotel and other conference facilities. After a three-year construction phase, the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue opened officially on 15 November 2000.
The complex had to encourage an atmosphere for dialogue about risks and opportunities in the insurance industry. It was up to the architects how and where this dialogue would take place. Meili and Peter provided an architecture of flowing spaces favouring informal moments, conversations in during breaks, surprising encounters, digressions and asides.
