The company's first location in 1864 was a two-room apartment on the first floor of Schoffelgasse 1 in Zurich. After five months, the four Swiss Re employees moved to new premises at Stadelhoferplatz. The hiring of a ninth staff member in 1865 again prompted the decision to move to larger premises.
The young reinsurance company purchased its first office building in 1875, the "Felsenburg" at Brandschenkestrasse 32 in the suburb of Zurich-Enge. In 1882 Swiss Re moved yet again, this time to Bahnhofstrasse 44. Twenty employees moved to the noble Zurich address. After 11 years in this location, the company moved to Gotthardstrasse.
In 1913 the new spaciously designed office building, "Altbau", on Zurich's Mythenquai was completed. Before settling in the "Altbau," Swiss Re had moved no less than seven times. By 1914 the company had approximately 350 employees.
