In 1924, Swiss Re acquired majority shareholding of Bavarian Reinsurance Company in Munich. With the purchase, the Swiss reinsurer strenghtened its position in the German market.
Bavarian Re's was founded as "Bayerische Rückversicherungsbank" in 1911. After the aquisition of a German reinsurer in 1937, the company changed its name to "Bayerische Rückversicherung AG."
The company played a valuable role, especially in the years after World War II, when it was no longer possible to maintain direct relations with German treaty partners during the allied occupation of Germany.
In 2001, the Bavarian Reinsurance Company was integrated into its parent company, Swiss Re. The company became Swiss Re Germany.
