These maps of Istanbul (1922), Tokyo (1934/35), and Hamburg (1902) were used in Swiss Re's fire underwriting department and belonged to its collection of what were known as "conflagration maps."

Major fire disasters, such as the great fire of Hamburg in 1842 and the conflagration in Glarus in 1861, had revealed how inadequate insurance cover was in those times.

In the world of reinsurance, "risk management" means recognising, evaluating, modelling and controlling risks. The plans shown here are early evidence of how such information used to be procured. They tell us which buildings in which streets were particularly vulnerable to fire and what measures were available for extinguishing fires.
