Founding company Helvetia also provided the first business opportunities to the fledgling company. Swiss Re's first marine reinsurance treaty was concluded with Helvetia General in St Gallen. The treaty was signed on 31 December 1863 and became effective as of 1 January 1864.

The first fire reinsurance treaty was signed on 1 & 15 May 1864 and became effective as of 1 May 1864. Treaty partner was Helvetia Fire (Helvetia Feuer), which had been founded three years earlier.
