"Swiss Reinsurance Company reached its 75th birthday at a time of great political and economic turmoil. [...] Today, 25 years later, we can say with relief that Swiss Reinsurance Company has also survived its fourth 25-year period in great shape, although the beginning was marked by unprecedented obstacles because of the five-year world war. We have gone from strength to strength and can now look forward to our second century knowing that our company is bigger and stronger than ever.
The three previous 25-year periods were each characterised by very individual events, and the fourth is no exception. Although we have continued to expand, similar to during the third 25-year period, in some cases the results are, however, very different.
What sets this fourth period apart is the significant shift in earnings from the underwriting business to financial operations: on the one hand, sinking profit margins in our primary industries and, on the other, rising interest income and capital gains. Over all, the annual surpluses fluctuated less than from 1914-1939 and the company strengthened internally without any setbacks, unlike during the third period. At the end of our 100th financial year we had considerably more net assets than at the beginning of the former 25-year period."
