In 1989, Walter B. Kielholz joined Swiss Re, becoming an Executive Board member in 1993 and the company's Chief Executive Officer from 1997 to 2002. In 1998, Kielholz was elected to Swiss Re's Board of Directors. He was Chairman from May 2009 to April 2021.

Since April 2021, Walter B. Kielholz is Honorary Chairman of Swiss Re. This is only the third time this prestigious title has been awarded at Swiss Re in its more than 150 years of history.

Kielholz was also a member of the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse Group Ltd from 1999 to 2014 and served as Chairman from 2003 to 2009.
