In 1904 Swiss Re recruited Erwin Hürlimann from the Swiss Bank Corporation in London. The Board of Directors of Swiss Re sought to promote local talent and approached Hürlimann's father, a member of a respected industrial family from Zurich.
In order to gain a thorough grounding in insurance Swiss Re Manager Charles Simon sent the young Hürlimann to placements in France, Germany, Italy and the UK.
Hürlimann took the position in 1919, becoming the company's first Swiss manager and leading it until 1930. By the time he resigned from the chairmanship in 1958 he had become known as the “grand old man of reinsurance.”
As his predecessor did, Hürlimann followed a strategy of international expansion. But unlike Simon, manager Hürlimann had a keen interest in the financial markets. As skilled financial manager, Hürlimann brought a new perspective to reinsurance.
