Swiss Re's commitment to corporate clients dates back to the time when the Swiss Re Group included a considerable number of primary insurers.
The Swiss Re subsidiary "Schweiz Versicherung" (Switzerland Insurance) in particular built a strong portfolio of so-called "International Programmes", beginning in the post-war period. As a primary insurer, "Schweiz Versicherung" could enter into direct business relationship with large groups of companies.
Swiss Re itself was also active in this field, still acting as a reinsurer but using fronting companies to underwrite the risks, or offering its services to the clients' captives.
In 1989, Swiss Re created an own department – called "R4" – for this kind of business. Two years later the "International Programmes" business of "Schweiz Versicherung" was integrated into this promising new part of Swiss Re.
In 1994, "R4" was renamed "International Business" (IB). Making use of synergies within the Swiss Re Group and cooperating with specialised affiliated companies, the department continued to offer tailor-made insurance and reinsurance products to its large corporate clients, including related risk management services and support.
After the acquisition of IRI as part of GE Insurance Solutions, the whole department was called Industrial Risk Insurer and the focus was more and more on insurance rather than reinsurance.
Corporate Solutions was founded in 2011 as a separate Business Unit of the Swiss Re Group. Since then Corporate Solutions has expanded on a global basis, operating through four regions.
